Just last May, Texas lawmakers made the decision to kill the Re-Roofing Registration Bill. The bill, which would have required roofers to register in the state by providing their name, address and a $250 registration fee, was removed as it raised concerns that smaller roofing companies may have a harder time drumming up business in the state. Much to the dismay of homeowners, the loss of the Re-Roofing Registration Bill also leaves them vulnerable to various roofing scams, which are rampant in Texas.
When a scammer offers you a great deal, and you tell them that you’ll need time to think about it, chances are this company will start to pressure to sign a contract immediately. This is a red flag that you should take note of immediately as a reputable contractor will always allow you to have time to think.
When doing your homework on a contractor, one of the first things you should do is to check their ratings on the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This is because the BBB always investigates customer complaints before publishing rankings, and if the contractor you’re looking at has a bad rating, it may be best to move on to a different one. The lack of local reviews or abundance of bad reviews on Google, Yelp or Facebook should be taken as a red flag as well.
If a big storm just plowed through your area, and you suddenly start receiving roofing repair offers from people, avoid them as much as you can. It’s likely that person is a stormchaser who’s looking to scam a homeowner.
Any contractor worth their salt will display any proof of certifications, licenses or insurance on their marketing materials or when asked by the homeowner. If you ask for proof of licenses or insurance, and they refuse to show it to you, don’t sign a contract with them, and find another contractor instead.
