Three-Tab or Architectural Shingles: What’s the Difference?

When you’re selecting shingles for your new roof, you will probably realize that there are different types of asphalt shingles, including three-tab and architectural shingles. As one of the premier roofing contractors in our area, New View Roofing offers both types. Today, we will discuss the features of each and explain which option is the best choice for your home.

Three-Tab Shingles
Three-tab shingles weigh and cost less than architectural shingles. They have only one shingle tab shape and size, and they are composed of only one flat layer.  They are affordable and simple to install, but they have a shorter service life than architectural shingles. However, thanks to advances in technology, three-tab shingles from top manufacturers like GAF still provide an acceptable level of durability.

Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles are also known as dimensional shingles. We recommend installing this shingle type because architectural shingles look better and last longer than three-tab shingles. The shingle tabs for architectural shingles come in different sizes and shapes, giving them a dimensional look. High-quality dimensional shingles can even mimic the look of wood shake or slate.

Architectural roofing shingles weigh 50% more than three-tab shingles, but their weight is far from a disadvantage. Their natural thickness allows architectural shingles to better resist weather damage. Architectural shingles cost more than three-tab shingles, but they have a longer service life and usually have a better warranty as well.
