Roof Fire Rating Basics You Need to Know

As a responsible homeowner, it is important to know the basics of how your roofing system is built and, even more so, how well it can protect your home under various circumstances.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

Roof ratings are determined by compliance with the UL 790 (ASTM E 108) Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Roof Coverings. Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global authority in safety certification, describes the test as a measurement of “..the fire resistance performance of roof coverings exposed to simulated fire sources originating from outside a building on which the coverings are installed. They are applicable to roof coverings intended for installation on either combustible or noncombustible decks.”

Roofing Types Associated With Fire Resistance

Homeowners who want roofing options that are distinguished for fire resistance can choose to install metal roofs or tile roofs in ceramic or clay. Fire-resistant is not all they are, however. New View Roofing offers these types of roofs to customers who want roofing systems that can last for decades and beautifully match whatever architectural style home they might have, too.

Fire Exposure Ratings

UL issues three fire exposure classes: Class A, Class B and Class C. Each class is associated with the level of fire exposure against which roof coverings may be effective. Class A represents effectivity against severe exposure, Class B against moderate exposure and Class C against light exposure.
