Hail-Damaged Roof Facts

Surprisingly enough, summer is the peak season for hailstorms, despite the hot weather. Unfortunately, hailstones can cause damage to your roof no matter what size it is, which can lead to roof repairs or even a replacement. While most people know about the obvious damage caused by hail, there are other dangers associated with these storms.

Hidden Damage

After a hailstorm, it’s entirely possible that you won’t be able to notice the damage it caused to your roofing system. Hail can cause small, barely visible marks on your roof that can eventually be a huge problem in the long run. Any hairline cracks that go unnoticed can also allow water infiltration beneath your shingles and cause moisture problems for your home. With that in mind, it’s important that you call a roofer once the storm has passed to inspect your roof for any damage.

Most Affected Roofing Material

The damage your roof will sustain can also depend on your home’s roofing material. For instance, asphalt shingles can suffer more hail damage compared to metal or wood shake roofs (though, it is possible for those roofing types to be affected as well). Its age will also come into play as the older your roofing system is, the more susceptible it is to hail damage.

Latent Damage

If your roof sustained severe damage during the hailstorm, you’ll be able to notice it due to dents, cracks and fissures on your roof. Latent damage, on the other hand, includes granule loss and shingle weakening, and might be harder to spot compared to severe damage. Once the storm has completely passed, don’t hesitate to call a professional to inspect and repair your roof.
