How to Cool Down a Hot Attic in Summer

Without adequate ventilation, the temperature in your attic can reach 150 degrees in summer. An overheated attic can, in turn, can cause the asphalt shingles on top to prematurely age, shortening your roof’s lifespan. High attic temperatures can also put added strain on your HVAC system, driving up costs by as much as 40%.

So, how can you keep your attic cool this summer?

Install Electric Ventilators and Attic Fans

Electric ventilators and attic fans can remove hot, humid air from your attic, keeping temperatures at comfortable levels. Modern ventilators usually have thermostats that automatically turn on the fan when temperatures reach 100 to 110 degrees.

Install Passive Vents

Another option would be to install passive vents, such as gable, soffit and ridge vents, to allow hot air to exit from your attic. If you’re going with this option, it’s best to consult a professional roofing contractor first. That’s because adding new vents can disrupt the airflow in your attic.

Having just the right number of vents pressurizes the attic, preventing cool air from exiting your home too quickly, and helps with optimal airflow.

Install Additional Insulation Layers

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most homes should have an R-value between 22 and 49. The R-value indicates the insulation’s ability to prevent heat transfer – the higher the R-value, the better insulative capability. If you’re not sure whether your attic has enough insulation, you should have a roofer inspect it.
